SE May Creek Park Drive is now open in both directions following a major roadway improvement project that enhances safety and accessibility for everyone who uses the corridor.

On Friday, April 3, the City reopened the improved section of SE May Creek Park Drive to two-way traffic. The project added non-motorized improvements along the eastern section of the roadway with new sidewalk and a bike lane to create safer space for people traveling through the area.

Although the road is now open, a few minor finishing touches will continue, including signage installation. Flaggers may be on site periodically for short periods to safely complete these final tasks. Additional project details and updates were previously shared through the City’s construction alert.

Newcastle Police Chief Mandella reminded drivers to continue traveling carefully through the area, “While SE May Creek Park Drive is open in BOTH DIRECTIONS, please do not try to make up for lost time! Thank you for obeying the posted 25 mph speed limit. We need to slow roll through there because of blind driveways, dogs, kiddos, and the neighbors we all care about!”

Construction began in September and was completed by Active Construction. Initial work included surveying and tree removal, followed by utility work that relocated stormwater, gas, electricity, water, sewer, and communications lines. Crews built four engineered retaining walls, poured new curb, gutter, and sidewalks, completed asphalt paving, and finished with guardrails, fencing, and landscaping to stabilize the corridor and complete the roadway improvements.

With the project largely completed, SE May Creek Park Drive offers a safer, more connected route for the community.
