Construction Alert | Hazelwood Park

Project: Hazelwood Park Boardwalk Replacement (P-029)

Location: Hazelwood Park

The City of Newcastle is replacing the pedestrian boardwalk in Hazelwood Park, a segment of the CrossTown Trail. Construction began August 14 and was originally scheduled to finish in early October. The existing timber boardwalk has been removed and is being replaced with a new, wider boardwalk supported on driven pin piles. The piles had to be driven deeper than originally anticipated to reach firm soil, which pushed the schedule back several weeks. The project also includes limited tree and invasive vegetation clearing, with native replanting at the close of construction. The boardwalk is now expected to be complete by mid-November, weather permitting.

What to Expect: Your Questions Answered

What work is being done? The existing timber boardwalk will be removed and replaced with a new, wider boardwalk supported on driven pin piles. The work also includes limited tree and invasive vegetation clearing, and native replanting once construction wraps up.

Will the park be closed? Yes, partially. The boardwalk and the immediate connecting trail will be closed to the public for the duration of construction. Closure signage and detours will be posted at the trailheads. Please do not enter the work area.

How long will construction last? Construction began on August 14. The pile driving, the only work that disturbs the wetland soils, was completed before the wet season. The remaining work is setting pile caps and installing the framing and decking. Based on the contractor’s current schedule, the boardwalk is expected to be complete by mid-November. Work will generally take place Monday through Friday, 7:00 am to 6:00 pm. No weekend work is anticipated.

Will there be noise? Pile driving is the loudest phase of the work and is expected in mid to late August. Its exact timing and duration can be difficult to predict, as they depend on soil conditions. Other equipment noise, including saws and small excavation equipment, will occur throughout construction.

What about construction traffic? Equipment will be staged near the Hazelwood Park entrance off 121st Pl SE. Nearby residents should expect minor construction traffic on nearby streets during work hours. The contractor is required to keep the site clean on a daily basis and control dust and mud.
