About Portable Signs
Portable signs are freestanding signs that can be moved and are not permanently attached to the ground. This includes sandwich board (A-frame) signs and pole-mounted signs on weighted bases. Portable signs help businesses attract attention, but must follow city rules to ensure safety and avoid impacts to traffic and pedestrians.
How to Apply
If a portable sign requires a permit under the city’s sign code (NMC 18.20.220), an application must be approved before the sign is placed. Applications are submitted online at MyBuildingPermit.com and reviewed by the City’s Community Development Department to confirm the sign meets size, location, and design standards. If additional approvals are required, such as a right-of-way use permit, those must be obtained as part of the process.
Terms & Conditions
Portable signs are allowed only in zones where commercial signs are permitted. Only one portable sign per business or tenant space is allowed. Signs must be constructed of durable materials and designed to withstand wind. Portable signs may not be illuminated or include electronic or changeable copy, and they may not be placed in the city right-of-way unless a separate permit is approved.
Additional Information
For permits required for building-mounted signs or rules for temporary signs, please find more information in the City’s sign regulations (NMC 18.20).
