Project: Hazelwood Park Boardwalk Replacement (P-029)
Location: Hazelwood Park
The City of Newcastle is preparing to begin construction to replace the pedestrian boardwalk in Hazelwood Park, which is a segment of the CrossTown Trail. The existing timber boardwalk will be removed and replaced with a new, wider boardwalk supported on driven pin piles. The project also includes limited tree and invasive vegetation clearing, with native replanting at the close of construction. Construction is expected to begin in August and continue into early October, roughly twelve weeks.
What to Expect: Your Questions Answered
What work is being done? The existing timber boardwalk will be removed and replaced with a new, wider boardwalk supported on driven pin piles. The work also includes limited tree and invasive vegetation clearing, and native replanting once construction wraps up.
Will the road be closed? Yes. The boardwalk and the immediate connecting trail will be closed to the public for the duration of construction. Closure signage and detours will be posted at the trailheads. Please do not enter the work area.
How long will construction last? Construction is expected to run from August into early October, roughly twelve weeks. Work will generally take place Monday through Friday, 7:00 am to 6:00 pm. No weekend work is anticipated.
Will there be noise? Pile driving is the loudest phase of the work and is expected in mid to late August. Its exact timing and duration can be difficult to predict, as they depend on soil conditions. Other equipment noise, including saws and small excavation equipment, will occur throughout construction.
What about construction traffic? Equipment will be staged near the Hazelwood Park entrance off 121st Pl SE. Nearby residents should expect minor construction traffic on nearby streets during work hours. The contractor is required to keep the site clean on a daily basis and control dust and mud.
