About Road Closures
Roads may be closed for many reasons, including traffic collisions, street flooding, fallen trees, or downed power lines. Closures help protect the public and allow crews to safely respond to the situation. Road closures are implemented by authorized City or emergency personnel and must be followed. A closure may include a City vehicle blocking the road, cones and signs, or temporary barriers such as flares or caution tape. All of these indicate the road is not safe to use.
Staff Response
The City’s top priority is to restore the road to a safe, passable condition as quickly as possible. The length of a closure depends on the situation. If a closure will last longer than expected or significantly affect traffic, the City will share updates through official City communication channels, including social media. Detours may be set up, and staff may help direct traffic when possible.
Safety First
Do not drive past road closure signs or barriers. This puts City staff and emergency responders at risk and can be dangerous for you. Closures are put in place because conditions ahead are unsafe, even if the road looks clear. Hazards such as downed power lines may be difficult to see and could still be live. Ignoring a closure can delay emergency response and increase the risk of serious injury.
Winter Storm Closures
During winter storms, never try to drive through a closed road. Conditions can be extremely dangerous, and help such as tow trucks or ambulances may not be able to reach you. Check City updates before traveling, and delay trips when possible during severe weather. When SE 76th Street is closed due to snow or ice, please use SE May Creek Park Drive or Lake Washington Boulevard NE instead.
