About Winter Weather

Snow, ice, and freezing temperatures can create dangerous conditions in Newcastle on roads, sidewalks, and around homes. Even a small amount of snow or ice can make travel difficult, and freezing rain or sudden cold weather can create risks for walking, driving, and power systems. Being prepared helps keep families, homes, and the community safe when winter weather arrives.

City Snow and Ice Response

When snow or icy conditions are expected, the City of Newcastle applies anti-icing treatments on major roads and problem areas beforehand. During snow events, lifeline and major arterial streets are cleared first, and neighborhood streets are cleared as resources allow. The city’s Snow and Ice Priority Routes Map shows which streets are treated first. Due to the large number of residential streets and limits on equipment, full clearing to bare pavement is not always possible, especially on less-traveled roads.

Staying Safe During Winter Weather Events

During snow and ice events, avoid driving until roads are cleared and conditions improve. If travel is necessary, slow down, leave extra space between vehicles, and watch for snowplows. Park cars in driveways or garages to keep streets clear. Take care when shoveling snow by using proper technique and taking breaks, and apply sand, salt, or other de-icers to walkways and steps before ice forms. Never shovel or blow snow back onto the street, as this creates hazards for traffic and snow removal.

Winter storms can also bring freezing temperatures and power outages, so it is important to be prepared at home. Stock up on essentials such as food, water, medicines, and warm clothing, and ensure heating systems are working properly. Keep extra blankets and a safe backup heater available. Vehicles should have a winter survival kit with an ice scraper, snow shovel, traction aids, blankets, flashlight, water, snacks, and jumper cables. Applying pet-safe de-icer or sand to sidewalks, steps, and entry points can also help reduce slipping hazards.
