A red and green entrance sign for Newcastle Cemetery stands outdoors between two dark wooden posts. The sign reads “City of Newcastle – Newcastle Cemetery” and includes the City of Newcastle seal and the address “7811 129th Avenue SE.” Behind the sign is a chain-link fence with large trees and forested vegetation on a sloped hillside. Sunlight illuminates the sign and surrounding ground cover.

Hosted by the Newcastle Historical Society, this Open House invites you to explore one of Newcastle’s hidden treasures – the historic Newcastle Cemetery. Tucked into a forested hillside overlooking Lake Boren, the cemetery is usually closed but opens for scheduled one-day events.

Covering just over two acres, the cemetery has served as the final resting place for coal miners and their families since the 1870s. It’s a rare, tangible connection to the diverse nationalities who shaped Newcastle’s coal-mining history.

What to expect:
–Docent-led tours with stories about those buried there
–Peaceful, self-guided walks through the site
–A chance to learn more about Newcastle’s rich past

Don’t miss this opportunity to connect with local history in a truly meaningful setting. All are welcome!
