A red and green entrance sign for Newcastle Cemetery stands outdoors between two dark wooden posts. The sign reads “City of Newcastle – Newcastle Cemetery” and includes the City of Newcastle seal and the address “7811 129th Avenue SE.” Behind the sign is a chain-link fence with large trees and forested vegetation on a sloped hillside. Sunlight illuminates the sign and surrounding ground cover.

Newcastle Cemetery Work Party

June 27 @ 10:00 am 2:00 pm

Join the Newcastle Historical Society for a community clean-up and restoration event at the Newcastle Historic Cemetery. Come for as little or as long as you’d like, every bit helps!

This historic two-acre cemetery has served as the final resting place for coal miners and their families since the 1870s. It remains the only tangible reminder of the nationalities of miners who helped shape Newcastle’s early coal mining industry.

What to bring:
–Work gloves
–Hand-held pruners (if you have them)
–Outdoor-appropriate clothing

What you’ll do:
–Clear ivy and debris
–Help transport already-cleared vegetation to an accessible area for City removal

This event qualifies for community service hours for Scouts and high school students.

Help preserve this important piece of Newcastle’s heritage!
