Herzog Memorial

A memorial for Deputy Richard “Rich” Herzog stands on Coal Creek Parkway, just south of Newcastle Way. Deputy Herzog joined the King County Sheriff’s Office in 1995 after retiring from the U.S. Army. Assigned to Newcastle, he spent his time patrolling neighborhoods, talking with residents, and sharing stickers with children, earning the love and respect of the community.

On June 22, 2002, Deputy Herzog responded to a disturbance on Coal Creek Parkway. During the incident, he was attacked and fatally shot while protecting the Newcastle community. Deputy Richard Herzog was a dedicated hero who served his country and community with courage. His call sign, “2-H-2,” has been permanently retired in his honor.
