About Business Licenses
A business license is required for any person or company that sells goods or services or conducts business in the City of Newcastle. This includes operating from a location in the city, visiting customers, making repairs, providing services, or regularly doing business within city limits (NMC 5.15). A license is required even if the business is based outside Newcastle.
Some very small businesses that earn $2,000 or less per year in Newcastle and do not have a location in the city may only need to register instead of paying for a full license. Certain organizations, such as government agencies, nonprofits, and religious organizations, may be exempt from paying a fee, but most must still apply so the City can keep a record of business activity.
How to Apply
The City has partnered with the Washington State Department of Revenue to issue business licenses. City licenses are added to the state Master Business License as an addendum and can be obtained either online or by mail using the state’s Business Licensing Wizard. Online applications typically take about 10 days to process, with extra time needed for City review. Mailed applications may take up to six weeks.
An application must be submitted before starting business activities in Newcastle. The application includes basic business information, along with a City license fee and a state processing fee. After submission, the City reviews the application to ensure it meets local requirements, such as zoning and safety rules. Once approved, the business license is issued and must be renewed each year to remain active.
