WHAT TO KNOW:

Rate Information

Collection rates consist of two components. The service component represents Waste Management’s collection service. The disposal component represents the cost paid to King County Solid Waste to dispose of the solid waste. Collection Rates vary by container size. The cost for recycling and yard/food waste is imbedded into the cost for garbage collection.

The base collection rates include a 8.49 percent street/administrative fee paid to the City to offset costs associated with wear and tear collection trucks put on Newcastle streets, as well as the contract administration costs. The fee generates about $150,000 in new revenue annually.

Current collection rates are available on the Waste Management
website.

Collection Contract Information

Solid Waste collection services in Newcastle are performed by Waste Management under a 10-year contract approved by the Newcastle City Council in July 2018. You can view the full background on that process and stories written about the contract at newcastlewa.gov/wastecontract.

Under the current contract Waste Management installed and manages six public solar-powered trash compactors alongside recycling containers in the city’s downtown area. The company also provides an annual $15,000 sponsorship for the city’s summer events.
