Stacy grew up in Newcastle with many fun memories and continues to live and volunteer in the community with the Newcastle Arts Council.
How long have you lived/worked in Newcastle and what brought you to live/work in Newcastle?I’ve lived in Newcastle my entire life. My grandmother Anna (Johnson) Carpine was born on Cougar Mountain in Newcastle. Her family were Newcastle cold miners. She married my grandfather Giovanni (John) Carpine also a coal miner. They had a five-acre farm in the Hazelwood area – which my parents later bought and raised me and my siblings there until we built our larger home on another 5 acres, which was just below Hazelwood Elementary.
What are some of the ways you contribute to our community?
Some of the ways I have contributed to our community over the years have been through Newcastle Baseball, volunteering with Big Brothers Big Sisters of Puget Sound, and I’m an active member on the Newcastle Arts Council helping to bring the arts alive in Newcastle!
Tell us a Newcastle memory.
I really had a great childhood growing up in Newcastle. Back in the day my friends and I were in the local 4-H group The Adventurers, most of us had ponies and horses. We would ride every day on the trails, which have since been developed into big neighborhoods. We would ride our horses through the Dairy Queen drive through and to Lake Boren before it was a park, and swim with them in the lake.
I also remember the time Lake Boren froze solid. People were ice skating and even driving their cars on it.
What do you hope for the future of Newcastle?
I hope in the future that Newcastle builds a community center for the arts and other activities. I’d love to see more permanent community art and something to commemorate the hundred-year history of coal mining that started our little city.
What are some of your favorite Newcastle places to visit?
Some of my favorite places to visit in Newcastle are sunsets at the Golf Club at Newcastle, the Cougar Mountain Wildland Park, and the Lake Boren Community Poetry Wall. I also enjoy stopping by to check out the amazing art that turns up in the Free Little Art Gallery at City Hall.
