Fall Recycling Collection Event | By the Numbers

Well done, Newcastle! Despite the stormy weather, you recycled 36,970 pounds (or 18.5 tons) of material at the Fall Recycling Collection Event on December 9.


Funding was provided by the Washington State Department of Ecology, the King County Solid Waste Division, the King County Hazardous Waste Management Program, and E-Cyle Washington.


Thank you for protecting the environment and keeping these recyclable materials out of landfills. Planning for our 2024 Spring Recycling Collection Event is already underway.


BY THE NUMBERS
  • 36,970 pounds (or 18.5 tons) of recyclable material
  • 317 carloads, averaging 166.6 pounds of material per vehicle.
  • 16,555 pounds of appliances, scrap metal, and electronic equipment. The material will be sorted and recycled by various metal recyclers in the Seattle area.
  • 2 used refrigerators and freezers. The ozone-depleting chemicals and gas will be removed from these units and disposed of properly by UpTekk Recycling in Auburn.
  • 91 TV sets. The TVs will be processed and recycled by Metro Metals in Tacoma.
  • 33 computer monitors. The monitors will be processed and recycled by Metro Metals.
  • 20 cubic yards of Styrofoam. The material will be processed by Styro Recycle in Kent.
  • 7,040 pounds of shredded paper. The confidential documents were shredded on site by Confidential Data Disposal in Issaquah.
  • 10 propane tanks. The tanks will be reused through a cylinder exchange service or will be recycled as scrap metal through various metal recyclers in the Seattle area.
  • 55 used tires. The tires will be reused if in good condition, if not, chipped and made into such products as garden hoses, playground mats, road bedding, and burned as fuel.
  • 9 lead acid batteries. The batteries will be dismantled, the acid disposed of properly, and the cores recycled into new batteries through All Battery.
  • 4,570 household batteries. The batteries will be dismantled, the hazardous material disposed of properly through All Battery.
  • 3 toilets and sinks. The porcelain material will be processed by Girard Resources and Recycling in Covington into concrete material.
  • 4,220 pounds of cardboard. The cardboard collected will be recycled by Sonico Recycling.
  • 8 mattresses and box springs. The mattresses and box springs were collected for recycling by Uptekk Recycling.
