When Councilmember Tony Ventrella stepped down from his position on August 1, he left a vacancy on the Newcastle City Council that will be filled by special appointment. The last day to apply was Friday, August 20. The City Clerk received nine applications, and one applicant has since withdrawn. The remaining eight applicants are as follows:

Thomas Filley

Larry Fudge

Claudia Hirschey

Brian Hunsicker

Vinita Kak

Garret Mock

Thomas Pemberton

Chris Villaseñor

The City Clerk completed validation of each of these applicants today. This means King County Elections has helped us to confirm that each applicant has been a registered voter within the City of Newcastle for at least one year, which is a legal requirement for each Councilmember.

Next Steps

The applications will go to the City Council for first review at their September 7 meeting. At this time, the Council will agree upon a set of interview questions and decide who they’d like to bring in for interviews at the next public meetingset for September 21(There is potential for an additional first-round interview date at a special public meeting, depending on the number of interviewees Council would like to pursue.) The City Council must vote in a new Councilmember by October 29. If they cannot reach a majority decision by that time, the decision will be made by the King County Council.
