After months of deliberation, the Newcastle Planning Commission will review a proposed ordinance that outlines regulations for short-term rentals in our community. They'll discuss the item during the July 22 virtual meeting and take public comment on the proposal.

The short-term rental industry is growing rapidly via online platforms such as Airbnb and Vrbo, particularly around Seattle. As the number of properties for rent has increased, City staff have received a growing number of complaints from neighbors of short-term rentals. As a result, City staff and the Planning Commission considered regulations intended to prevent public nuisances, protect the character of neighborhoods, enhance safety, protect Newcastle’s affordable housing stock and clarify zoning requirements for short-term rentals.

Following the public hearing, the Planning Commission will make a recommendation to the City Council. The Council will then consider the proposed ordinance for adoption at a future meeting.

To protect the health and safety of our residents, volunteer Commissioners and staff, the July 22 Planning Commission meeting will be held via video conference. It starts at 6 p.m on Wednesday. You can view the agenda packet here. Members of the public will still have a chance to listen, watch and participate. The link to the meeting will be posted below as soon as it is available.
