In the Pacific Northwest, fall means more than pumpkin spice and football, it means the return of wild Pacific salmon to rivers and creeks throughout our communities. In late summer, salmon begin the long journey from the ocean to their birthplaces in streams and rivers. Salmon, including Chinook, coho, and sockeye return to May Creek and Coal Creek just downstream of Newcastle. About 84 percent of Newcastle drains into May and Coal Creeks. This means, every action we take at home in Newcastle impacts salmon habitat. Always remember, Only Rain Down the Drain!

Coal Creek salmon can be viewed in the creek as it flows through Coal Creek Natural Area. Access Coal Creek Natural Area from Bellevue's trailhead on Coal Creek Parkway between Forest Dr SE and SE 60th Street or from the trailhead behind Coal Creek YMCA in Newcastle. View the Newcastle Trails Map to find the exact location of the Coal Creek Trail in Newcastle. Salmon are typically spotted in the northern portions of the creek.

Newcastle and 27 other nearby cities work together to protect and preserve wild Pacific salmon through the WRIA 8 workgroup. Each fall, WRIA 8 sponsors the Salmon SEEson program which helps community members view salmon in the wild. Find all salmon viewing locations here: http://bit.ly/salmonseeson.

Don't forget to recreate responsibly and see the salmon with members of your household.
