As COVID-19 keeps us separated and forces the cancellation of summer events, the City of Newcastle is exploring creative ways to bring our community together in a safe manner. That’s why we’re partnering with the Newcastle Rocks Facebook Group and 4Culture to offer free rock-painting kits for Newcastle residents.

“During this difficult time, the Newcastle Rocks movement has brought our community together in a very meaningful way,” said Newcastle Mayor Linda Newing. “Seeing those colorful, painted rocks along our trails and in our parks reminds us how works of art can brighten our days.”

Each kit includes paint brushes, acrylic paint pens, Mod Podge finisher and a white acrylic paint base. Instructions on how to participate in the #NewcastleRocks movement and rock painting tips are included in every kit. You can view a copy of the handout here.

Kits will be distributed to Newcastle residents on Saturday, June 20 in the Lake Boren parking lot starting at noon. Simply drive up and we’ll place the kit in your vehicle for safe, no contact delivery. Limit one kit per household. There is a very limited supply of kits available. We’ll be at Lake Boren Park distributing them while supplies last. Get there early to ensure you snag one!

“Our hope is that these kits can continue to facilitate the rainbow of creativity bringing smiles to everyone's faces and show us all how special and connected our Newcastle community truly is,” Mayor Newing said.

NEW! CHALK GIVEAWAY
Newcastle's beloved Fourth of July event is canceled this year due to the COVID-19 outbreak. We can't get together to see the fireworks like up the night sky, but that doesn't mean we have to go without some sort of show...an art show, to be exact. We're asking neighborhoods to decorate their sidewalks and driveways to celebrate Fourth of July this year. In the week leading up to Fourth of July, use chalk to draw colorful fireworks or any other design that inspires you. Chalk art your sidewalk or driveway and generate some enjoyment for your neighborhood! Just remember to follow social distancing guidelines. Once you're done, post your creations on social media using #ChalkNewcastle, then explore your community to see what your neighbors have come up with. To facilitate this project, the City will be handing out free packs of chalk along with the rock painting kits on Saturday. Look for additional chalk distribution days later in the week.

This project is entirely supported through funding from a 4Culture Sustained Arts Support grant. Questions? Email [email protected].
