NEWCASTLE SEEKS APPLICANTS
TO WRITE VOTERS’ PAMPHLET PRO AND CON STATEMENTS FOR LOCAL UTILITY TAX REFERENDUM
The City of Newcastle seeks applications of interest from residents to write pro and con statements for the voters’ pamphlet regarding Newcastle Referendum 2, Levy of Utility Taxes, that may be placed on the November 2020 election ballot. The city council adopted Ordinance 2020-609, which approved a 3% tax on utilities to fund public safety services beginning January 2021. A referendum petition has been filed to place the measure on the November ballot for acceptance or rejection by Newcastle voters.
If the referendum measure is placed on the ballot, statements about it will appear in the local voter’s pamphlet. Two committees of no more than three residents would write statements in favor of the ordinance (the pro committee) or opposed to it (the con committee). Procedures and deadlines for submitting the statements will be provided to each committee upon appointment.
The application deadline to serve on either committee is 5 p.m., Wednesday, July 15, 2020.
If you are an interested Newcastle resident, please send an application to the City Clerk that includes the following information:
1. Contact Information:

2. Statement on which committee you wish to serve on, either the pro committee (writing a statement in support of utility tax ordinance) or the con committee (writing a statement in opposition of utility tax ordinance)
