Every September, Newcastle residents gather at Lake Boren Park for a memorable community festival packed with food, music, games and activities for all. But what exactly are we celebrating? Well, Newcastle Days falls in September for a very good reason — that’s the month in 1994 that Newcastle officially became a City. Newcastle Days is a chance for our citizens to come together, honor our past and celebrate the spirit of community that shapes us today and into the future.

Help us commemorate 25 years of Newcastle at Lake Boren Park on Sept. 6-7 for a Newcastle Days festival that combines old favorites with new, exciting activities worthy of a bash celebrating our community’s silver anniversary. Newcastle Days planning continues through the month, but click on the dropdown menus below to see what's in store so far!

Newcastle Days goes from 6-8 p.m. on Friday Sept, 6, and 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 7.

Broadway on Boren

Back by popular demand, the Broadway on Boren music spectacular returns to Newcastle Days on Friday, Sept. 6 at 6:30 p.m. Director Mary Rudd has put together an all-star cast for the 2019 Broadway themed show on the outdoor stage at Lake Boren Park. You’ll see a host of new faces, hear some spectacular voices and share in Broadway music from the past and present. It’s a little taste of Broadway without the traffic and expensive parking! We’ll save a seat for you!

Newcastle Days Parade

March in the parade that officially kicks off Newcastle Days! You can be a part of this community tradition and help us start the day off right! We're seeking community groups, organizations, neighborhoods, even you and your dog to participate in the parade that winds through Lake Boren Park. If you'd like to join in on the fun, please fill out the Newcastle Days Parade Entry Form and return it to christinac@newcastlewa.gov by Aug. 30.

Participants in this year’s parade are required to create some sort of banner or sign that identifies the group (have fun and be creative with it)! We’re also asking all participants to bring candy or some type of giveaway to hand out to spectators watching along the parade route. We're encouraging the entire community to come watch the parade - and bring a bag, too, so you can deposit all of the goodies you receive from the marchers!

The Newcastle Days parade starts at 10:30 a.m. Come watch and cheer on your community members!

Food Options

Stop by one of these wonderful vendors for a bite to eat! Food will be available Friday evening and all day Saturday.

Frank’s Franks will be offering gourmet sausages and all-beef hot dogs. You can also find Seattle-based food truck Chomp selling fresh burritos, bowls and wraps on Saturday only. Anyone who has been enjoying Newcastle’s Concerts in the Park this summer will recognize Tastyz, who will be at Newcastle Days selling their signature kettle corn and shaved ice. Local restaurant Yang’s Kitchen will also be on hand selling appetizer-type food*. A Fire Inside Pizza is back to serve their brand of wood-fired pizza. Finally, if you’re 21 or over, make sure to stop by the Newcastle Chamber of Commerce Beer and Wine Garden featuring Resonate Brewery and Cedar River Cellars.

Additionally, if you get there early on Saturday morning, you can purchase coffee and donuts for $1 each (cash only). Proceeds from the sales will be donated to support Coal Creek Family YMCA programming.

*Unfortunately, Yang's Kitchen is no longer able to attend. We apologize for the inconvenience*

Main Stage Performances

The community is taking over the Newcastle Days stage this year! Instead of a band-only lineup, we’re filling our stage with community performances throughout the day. That means you’ll see routines from the likes of the Cornerstone Studio dancers, the Liberty and Hazen drill teams, the Coal Creek Family YMCA hip hop dance classes and Anna’s Fusion Dance, an Aegis Gardens group that specializes in everything from jazz to traditional Chinese dance styles. VERDE Organic Body is set to offer a free family-friendly yoga/fitness class later in the day. Youth Theatre Northwest is also bringing live theater to the stage with a performance at 2 p.m.

Newcastle Days will still be alive with the sound of live music! In the morning, The Golf Club at Newcastle’s resident bagpiper Neil Hubbard will kick things off. Come hear the traditional sounds of the bagpipe fill Lake Boren Park as we officially open the Newcastle Days festival. You’ll also hear music from The Rovin' Fiddlers and rock-music covers from the local band Misguided Notions.

All of these performances lead up to our festival headliner: Newcastle’s own Rock and Roll Hall of Famer Alan White and his band White are back to close out Newcastle Days in style at 6 p.m. White, the drummer for the progressive rock band Yes, is considered by many to be one of the greatest rock drummers of all time. With 40-plus years of performance experience and appearances on over 50 albums, including John Lennon's Imagine, his dossier reads like a who's-who of rock legends. White will entertain with progressive rock and soulful vocals, including some of his memorable material with Yes and John Lennon.

Kids Activities

Newcastle youngsters are sure to stay busy with our full slate of kids activities on tap for Saturday. Stop by our Kids Zone on the lawn to take a free ride on the inflatable dual slide or race your way through the Zip It obstacle course. Take turns tumbling your way through the gymnasium on Dizzy’s Tumblebus, too. Plus, let out your inner percussionist when you play the drums on the Kids Zone Junk Chime art installation.

New this year! Head to the tennis court where you can play a series of free carnival-type games, including an inflatable axe throw, a basketball game with dual hoops, an inflatable football-throwing station and a baseball game that challenges you to hit the ball to certain spots.

Honoring Our Past

What’s a bash honoring Newcastle’s 25th birthday without some cake? Join us at 2 p.m. to sing happy birthday as we cut into a special cake emblazoned with the City’s 25th anniversary logo. We’ve enlisted a few special guests to help us blow out the candles, too! Several of Newcastle’s past mayors will be on hand! Stop by to eat some cake and shake hands with the men and women who helped shape this community.

As many of you know, Newcastle’s history dates back further than incorporation, and you can learn more about our coal-mining past when you visit the Newcastle Historical Society booth at Newcastle Days. The normally closed Historic Newcastle Cemetery, the final resting place for our coal mining pioneers and their families since the 1870s, will also be open to the public throughout the Newcastle Days weekend. Newcastle Historical Society member Vickie Olson, whose ancestors worked in the Newcastle mines, will lead a narrated hike of the cemetery at 1 p.m.

And don't forget to bring $10 cash to get your hands on a limited edition anniversary keepsake. The City of Newcastle will sell 25th anniversary T-shirts at our booth. Wear your community pride on your chest. Cash only, please.

Superheroes and Seahawks Dancers

Rumor has it you might find yourself running into some super individuals at this year’s festival. Captain America and Captain Marvel are taking time out of their busy schedules to celebrate Newcastle’s 25th anniversary with us! You can find them wandering around Lake Boren Park from 1-3 p.m. on Saturday to chat, sign autographs and take pictures.

September is the start of football season, and what better way to celebrate than to visit with our very own Seahawks Dancers? A few members of the Seattle Seahawks dance squad will be on hand to visit Newcastle Days attendees from 1-3 p.m. Go Hawks! The Seahawks Dancers' appearance is sponsored by Classic Cleaners and The Garage in Renton.

You can also visit with some of our community’s own superheroes! Explore a Bellevue Fire Truck or meet a Newcastle Police Officer from 1-3 p.m. on Saturday. You’ll also get a chance to explore some of our Public Works vehicles too. Take a picture with the snow plow that made your streets safe this past winter. Newcastle's Public Works Department presents Touch a Truck from 2-4 p.m. near the playground.

Celebrating the Arts in Newcastle

Newcastle Days is a great time to celebrate your creativity as well as that of our neighbors and community members through several events and activities sponsored by the Newcastle Arts Council. To celebrate Newcastle Days, the Newcastle Arts Council will host an exhibit showcasing artwork at the Newcastle Library. The community art exhibition runs Sept. 2-27, with a formal opening on Thursday, Sept. 5, 7 p.m., where the community can meet the artists.

On Saturday, everyone can get involved in exploring their creativity when the sidewalks of Lake Boren Park will come alive with color. We need your help though! Come by the Newcastle Arts Council booth and grab some chalk to leave your mark on the pathways. Everyone is welcome to participate.

There are other Newcastle Days art programs in the works too! Have fun and get creative when you decorate and paint your own rock. The rocks will become part of an installation surrounding landscaped beds outside of Newcastle City Hall.. Thank you to the Newcastle Arts Council and 4Culture for their support in offering these programs!

Old Favorites: Car Show, Ponies and Petting Zoo

As you can see, there are a lot of new activities planned for our 25th anniversary celebration. But don’t worry, old favorites such as the car show, pony rides and petting zoo (both starting at noon on Saturday) are back.

Imagine riding to the red carpet in one of the many vehicles on display at the Newcastle Days Cars on the Green show hosted by celebrity Lance Lambert! Participants will show off their cars and compete to win trophies. Even if you and your vehicle aren’t participating, you can enjoy strolling through the show and admiring the wide range of vehicles on display! There will be awards presented in categories including People’s Choice, Best Convertible and many more. Ballots will be available for voting at the car show check-in booth.

The Cars on the Green Show goes from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sept. 7. Cars must check-in by 9 a.m. Event-day registration is $15, but those who pre-register by Aug. 30 get a $5 discount. Car Show entry is off of 129th Avenue Southeast. Learn more at newcastlewa.gov/carshow.
