Get to know Newcastle Police Department Detective Chris Leyba!

Years in law enforcement both with the King County Sheriff's Office (KCSO) and any other agencies

I have been an officer for nearly 10 years. I spent my first seven years with Seattle PD and came to KCSO in 2018

Time in Newcastle and what you like about being here

I have been with Newcastle since January 2016. Having worked in much more fast paced and dangerous communities outside of our agency, I choose to stay with Newcastle for a few reasons. First, we have an engaged community that reports everything they see of an unusual nature. It tends to make our lives easier, as even the smallest tips we get turn into large arrests. In 2017, we arrested a King County top-five property crimes offender because a citizen called him in sleeping in his running vehicle on the street outside her house. It is moments like this that define the department AND our community's commitment to keeping each other safe. The second reason I continue here is the support we get from the City government. We have had numerous opportunities to think outside of the box when it comes to getting equipment and officer safety tools for the department. The City government has always supported our mission of keeping Newcastle safe, a partnership which has allowed us to significantly reduce crime and other quality of life issues in the community.

What do you wish people knew about police/police work?

If I could convince anyone of anything about police work they may not know, it is that we really are more human than people want to believe. We have a lot of discretion afforded to us by citizens in how we apply the law, which allows us to find alternatives to incarceration for each and every minor offense we come across. If I could appeal to the public on one thing, it would be that the importance of this discretion is paramount; any legislation or ideology that chips away at that removes our ability to do police work with both compassion and independent reasoning.

Hobbies outside of work?

Outside of work, I am obtaining my MBA I guess studying would be my primary "hobby" at the moment. Other than that, however, I enjoy target shooting, woodworking projects and horseback riding.

Anything else you want to say or want people to know?

Say hi when you see us if you want! We have free badge stickers for the kids!
