At last week’s Council Meeting, the major focus was on the appointment process to fill the City Council Position 4 vacancy.

Council has the opportunity to appoint someone to fill the remainder of the term left by Tony Ventrella in August, when he moved to Pierce County to be closer to family. Newcastle City Council will need to appoint this new councilmember to fill the remainder of his term by October 29, at which point the decision would turn over to the King County Council.

Tuesday night, applicants Garrett Mock, Chris Villasenor, and Claudia Hirschey were each nominated to fill the position. After three rounds of voting, no applicant received a majority vote, and the Council agreed to revisit the matter at the October 19 Regular Council Meeting.

Other Items of Note:
In Mayor Newing’s report, she acknowledged the passing of longtime City of Renton community leader Don Persson, who served as a councilmember for 20 years and a Renton police officer for 33, and who was an inspirational model of community engagement for many.

Mayor Newing also noted that October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month. Learn more or find resources with the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence.

The Energize Eastside public hearings have been delayed until January.

Jason Probart has been hired as a new Maintenance Technician with the City. He previously served as a temporary seasonal employee in the same role, and we’re glad he’ll be joining us year-round!
