A Walkable, Bikeable Newcastle
The purpose of the Non-Motorized Transportation Plan is to provide a methodical, objective and documented process of ranking and prioritizing needed non-motorized projects within the City’s jurisdiction.
Included in this Non-Motorized Plan (NMP) are lists of prioritized projects calling for the scheduled construction of identified “missing segments” in the City’s non-motorized network over a 20-year period.
The “missing segments” include sidewalks, trails and bike facilities which are intended to provide a safe and continuous link between key destinations within the City. The primary to and from destinations include schools, businesses, parks, dense residential areas and transit stops.
The primary intended result of the NMP is to provide guidance on the prioritization of funding for non-motorized infrastructure construction. The scheduling and budgeting mechanism for nonmotorized construction will be the City’s Capital Improvement Program (CIP), supplemented by the Transportation Improvement Program (TIP).
