Suzi O'Byrne

Suzi has lived in Newcastle for nearly 50 years and has served our city in many capacities.

How long have you lived in Newcastle and what brought you here?

I first came to Newcastle in 1973 with a friend that owned a lot on Lake Boren (where the boat launch is now). We would go fishing before I had to be at my classes at the University of Washington.

I have lived in Newcastle since 1977 when my husband and I moved from the Newporter Apartments to our home off Lake Washington Blvd. I now live along May Creek Park Dr. Our house was a built in 1925 in the coal mining community of Union Town, where the coal miners that belonged to the union lived. The Union Hall was east of my house just before Coal Creek Parkway on the north side (info provided by Kai from the Newcastle Historical Society!)

What are the ways you contribute to our community?

I retired in October 2007 after 30+ years as a supervisor for the Bellevue Police Department. I applied to an ad for a Newcastle Parks Commissioner position and was accepted and started in November 2007. I served as a Parks Commissioner until the Parks Commission became the Activities Commission in 2011. Since then, my husband Steve and I, along with Mark and Mary Ryker, have been the volunteers tasked with the Newcastle Days Classic Car Show.

I am also one of three water/sewer Commissioners elected to represent you, the rate payer with our Coal Creek Utility District. It is an honor to be one of your commissioners.

Tell us a Newcastle memory.

In the 1990’s, the Austin Heely car club participated in the Newcastle Days Classic Car Show. I got to take a picture of my young son Austin in one of the Austin Heelys!

What do you hope for the City of Newcastle?

I truly hope that this city remains a safe place to live, play, work, and raise your family!

What is your idea of a perfect weekend in Newcastle?

My perfect weekend is spending time with my granddaughters! Also, working in my gardens, grooming our little Mustang horse Zeeba, and sharing the vegetables we have grown over the summer with passersby on the waterline trail!

What are some of your favorite Newcastle places to visit?

I like the Newcastle Golf Course, The Coalman and Tapatio for meals. As a Master Gardener, the Newcastle Fruit Stand is my favorite source for indoor and outdoor plants, fresh vegetables, and their trees for the holidays!
