Deputy Richard A. Herzog
End of Watch: June 22, 2002
In 1995, Rich Herzog joined the King County Sheriff’s Office after retiring from the U.S. Army. He was soon selected for assignment with the City of Newcastle. He spent a great deal of time patrolling neighborhoods, talking to residents, and passing out stickers to the children.
On Saturday, June 22, 2002, Deputy Herzog responded a report of an individual creating a disturbance on Coal Creek Parkway. Deputy Herzog attempted to subdue the individual with pepper spray and was subsequently attacked. His service weapon was knocked to the ground and picked up by the suspect, who shot Herzog several times. It was at this scene that Rich made the supreme sacrifice giving his life while serving and protecting the citizens of Newcastle.
Newcastle will always have a tremendous amount of love and respect for Rich. He was a true hero and dedicated his life to serving his country and community.
Officer Rich Herzog’s Call Sign “2-H-2” has been retired permanently. There is a memorial to Officer Herzog on Coal Creek Parkway just south of Newcastle Fruit and Produce.
