UPDATED: Newcastle Volunteer Opportunities: Trails, Cemetery Cleanup and More
Posted on 05/10/2018

Volunteering is a great way to have fun, give back, and learn more about your community! The City of Newcastle recognizes the importance of volunteerism and the significant role it plays in providing a richer quality of life for the Newcastle community. Newcastle has volunteer opportunities available for groups and individuals of diverse talents, ages, and interests.

Each month, the Newcastle Community Activities Commission will highlight a few volunteer opportunities on the city's website, social media accounts and email newsletter. If your organization is interested in sharing volunteer opportunities with the community in upcoming posts, contact Commissioner Patti Magers at pattim@newcastlewa.gov. VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES IN NEWCASTLE

Updated May 10, 2018

Newcastle Historical Society
Opportunity: Help spruce up the Newcastle Historic Coal Miner’s Cemetery! Join the Newcastle Historical Society during cleanup work parties to remove growth and debris in the southwest corner of the cemetery. The historic cemetery is the final resting place of Newcastle’s pioneers and a reminder of the city’s rich coal-mining past. As ground is cleared, we will begin probing for artifacts to help identify burial sites. The primary goal is to find a Chinese burial brick which would confirm the temporary internment for exhumation.
Date: May 16-18 (Contact Rich for more information)
Contact: To get involved, contact Rich Crispo at richc@newcastlewa.gov.

Newcastle Trails
Opportunity: Newcastle Trails, the nonprofit organization dedicated to the preservation, maintenance and expansion of the city’s trail system, is seeking volunteers to assist with trail construction (mostly Wednesdays and weekends). The group is also looking for a trail walks guide and someone who can help update the trail map (preferably an individual with GIS expertise to augment current efforts). As of May 10, the meeting minutes scribe and website support positions posted in the previous newsletter are filled! Thank you!

Newcastle Theatre Group
Opportunity: Now’s your chance to contribute to a local grassroots effort to form a viable theater group in the Newcastle area. The group is seeking individuals/groups/organizations with interest in local theater. Whether you are a costumer, set builder, audio expert, actor, director, fundraiser or funder, all theater enthusiasts are welcome. The theater group presented its first production “You’re A Good Man Charlie Brown” at Newport Covenant Church last February.
