Newcastle Named One of the Best Places to Live in America
Posted on 09/18/2017

The City of Newcastle is one of the best places to live in America, according to Money magazine’s annual ranking of the nation’s top 100 communities. Newcastle, at No. 91, is one of only two Washington State cities on the 2017 list.

Money looks at locations with populations between 10,000 and 100,000, eliminating those that have “more than double the national crime risk, less than 85 percent of its state’s median household income, or a lack of ethnic diversity.” Researchers then narrow the list further after analyzing about 170,000 different data points and conducting on-site visits for intangible factors. The greatest weight is on economic health, cost of living and public school performance.

“Choosing to live in Newcastle continues to be a smart decision. Money’s data shows we have low crime, excellent schools, many amenities and an overall high quality of life. We’re so proud that our small, unique community has made this list for the fourth time,” City Manager Rob Wyman said.

Newcastle was honored by Money’s ranking in 2009, 2011 and 2013. Previously the magazine used a subcategory for a city of Newcastle’s size, but now presents one overall list.

Newcastle combines the convenience and choices of urban living with the comfort and community of a small town. Located within the Seattle metropolitan area, Newcastle gives its residents the opportunity for commuting easily to work and returning home to a safe community with fun events, possibilities for outdoor recreation and shopping for daily essentials. The diversity of people who choose Newcastle as their home create a truly special atmosphere. A spirit of volunteerism is alive and well here.

“We are adding new residents on a daily basis who will contribute to our city and make it even stronger. With many new community projects and plans to improve the downtown, Newcastle will strive to go up in its ranking,” City Manager Wyman said.
