Children & Families

Toddler Story Time
Monday, April 2, 9, 16, 23 and 30, 10:15am and 11:30am
Join us for 30 minutes of silly songs and fun stories! This program is designed with toddlers in mind (children ages 1-3) but all children are welcome. Play time with a parachute, blocks, toys and bubbles takes place right after Story Time. Space is limited for Toddler Story Times. Tickets are available at the front desk the morning of the program.

Play & Learn Chinese
Tuesday, April 3, 10, 17 and 24, 10:30am
Newborn to age 5 with caregiver. Have fun singing songs, sharing books and stories, creating art and playing. This program is conducted primarily in Chinese but the facilitator is a bilingual English/Chinese speaker.

Infant Story Time
Wednesday, April 4, 11, 18 and 25, 10:15am
Newborn to 12 months with adult, siblings are welcome to attend. Introduce your baby to books! Join us for silly songs and fun stories in this 30 minute lapsit program for pre-walkers! Play time with shakers, blocks, and bubbles takes place right after Story Time.

Preschool Story Time
Wednesday, April 4, 11, 18 and 25, 11:30am
Ages 3 to 5 with adult, siblings are welcome to attend. Join us for silly songs, fun stories and work on kindergarten readiness skills in this 30 minute program for preschoolers. Play time with a parachute, blocks and bubbles takes place right after Story Time!

Japanese Story Time
Thursday, April 5, 12, 19 and 26, 10:30am
Family program, all ages welcome. Come to the meeting room for stories and songs in Japanese! This program is for Japanese speaking children and families, and for children learning Japanese.

Ages 10 to 17. Join fans of rockets, space travel, and explosions in playing the award-winning computer game Kerbal Space Program! Use one of our laptops or bring your own if you already play.Space is limited. First come, first served.

Movie Night: Marvel's "The Avengers"
Wednesday, April 11, 6:00pm
For teens and adults. Watch Marvel's first Avengers movie before "Avengers: Infinity War" comes to theaters in May! Iron Man, Captain America, the Hulk and Thor join forces in order to defeat Thor's brother Loki, who has obtained a mystical artifact of tremendous power. Rated PG-13. Sponsored by the Friends of the Newcastle Library.

Newcastle Youth Community Engagement (NYCE)

Held at Newcastle City Hall, 12835 Newcastle Way #200, Newcastle, WA 98056.Attention middle and high school students! Volunteer and join Newcastle Youth Community Engagement (NYCE) to help the Newcastle Library and the City of Newcastle create the programs, services, and events you want to see! Munch on snacks and have fun while you make a difference!

Get Your Film Started Workshop and Team Registration
Saturday, April 21, 3:00pm
Grades 6-12. Presented by Tropium Nitrate Productions and Newcastle Youth Community Engagement (NYCE). Come create and register your team for the Newcastle Teen Film Contest! Learn the basics of making a film and how to write a production plan that will get you to the finish line. Contest rules will be announced. Sponsored in partnership with the City of Newcastle, Werxo, and the Friends of the Newcastle Library.

Filming & Editing on Your Mobile Device Workshop
Wednesday, April 25, 6:00pm
Grades 6-12. Presented by Reel Grrls. Learn how to film and edit on your mobile device for the Newcastle Teen Film Contest. Get techniques to enhance your content with good composition, lighting, audio tips and more. Bring your own mobile device. Sponsored in partnership with the City of Newcastle, Werxo and the Friends of the Newcastle Library.


Talk Time

Practice speaking English with other English language learners. Learn about American culture and meet people from around the world. Classes are free; join anytime.

SHIBA Counseling in Chinese and English

Volunteers from Statewide Health Insurance Benefits Advisor (SHIBA) will offer free, unbiased individual health benefits counseling in Chinese and English. Appointment only - no drop ins. Call 206-957-8450 to schedule. If you, or a family member, are struggling with understanding Medicare and Medicaid benefits, 1-on-1 counseling can help. This service is provided by Chinese Information Service Center by a trained SHIBA (Statewide Health Insurance Benefits Advisor) volunteer. They can talk about: Health care options, medical billing, Medicare and Medicaid, and other issues related to paying for health care. Please call 206-957-8450 to schedule an appointment.

Circulo de Lectura en Español

Relato de un náufrago by Gabriel García MárquezVengan a conocer a otros lectores hispanohablantes, y a mejorar su español, participando en estos círculos de lectura mensuales, donde compartiremos impresiones sobre las novelas asignadas, mismas que representan lo mejor de la literatura en español. La biblioteca tendrá disponibles copias de los libros que los lectores pueden pedir prestadas en cantidad limitada, pero todos son bienvenidos a participar. Los esperamos.

Tree Planting & Composting Workshop
Spring is the perfect time to plant trees. Their beauty and positive environmental impact is an investment in the future. Learn tree planting and care tips from local experts and composting tips and supplies from Waste Management. Newcastle residents will receive a voucher using dedicated City of Newcastle tree mitigation funds towards a tree at the Newcastle Fruit and Produce stand. This educational workshop includes:

• Learning about different types of trees and benefits of them
• Properly planting trees to ensure survival
• Tree health – mulching and watering techniques
• What, how, and importance of composting
• Get started with some free composting supplies

In partnership with Newcastle Fruit and Produce, City of Newcastle and Waste Management.

Memoir Writers Meet-Up
Friday, April 27, 10:30am
Preserve your life experiences, leave a legacy for future generations. Share your stories, swap writing tips, network with other Memoir writers. Bring your stories and get feedback (not criticism) to what you have written. Get ideas for capturing more memories, write a 'creative' memoir. All writing levels and drop-ins welcome. An experienced writer facilitates each Meet-Up. Join us every fourth Friday of the month!
