Lights, camera, action! The Newcastle youth board is proud to announce the 2018 Newcastle Teen Film Contest. Get your creative juices flowing now and have fun as you create a short film. Winning movies will be featured at the city’s Summer Movie Night on Aug. 15 and receive a special prize from sponsor Werxo, a local media production company.

Newcastle Youth Community Engagement (NYCE) created the contest as a way for teens to have fun and meet new people. Participation is free and open to students in grades 6-12. Contestants must work in teams of two or more. Films should be 3-5 minutes in length, family friendly and fall within one of three genres: action, comedy or documentary.

The movies should show a connection to Newcastle, so all films must incorporate shots of these locations: the dock at Lake Boren Park, any Newcastle trail sign and the brick Newcastle monument located at the Newcastle Commons.

Films are due June 30. To participate, turn in the entry form to the Newcastle Library by June 25 at 9 p.m. Those who sign up will receive information about how to turn in the film.

A judging panel will use a scoring rubric to choose winning films in each of the three genre categories. The winning films will be shown at the City of Newcastle’s Summer Movie Night at Lake Boren Park on Aug. 15. Films could also be featured on the King County Library System and City of Newcastle websites and social media pages.

To help you, the Newcastle Library is hosting the following film editing sessions in May:

Drop-In Film Editing Lab
Tuesday, May 8 and 22, 3-6pm
Saturday, May 26, 1:30-4pm
Presented by Newcastle Youth Community Engagement (NYCE). Grades 6-12.
Use professional software Adobe Premiere to edit your film for the Newcastle Teen Film Contest. The director of Werxo will be at the May 26 editing lab to answer questions. Bring a flash drive to save your work.

The Newcastle Library is offering several other resources through the process. Learn more here.

The Newcastle Teen Film Contest is presented by Newcastle Youth Community Engagement (NYCE) and the King County Library System, in partnership with the City of Newcastle and Werxo, a local media production company. NYCE is a joint effort between the City of Newcastle and the Newcastle Library (with program support from the Coal Creek Family YMCA) to develop leadership skills, highlight youth ideas and opinions, and enhance the Newcastle community. NYCE meets the third Wednesday of every month from 6:30-7:30 p.m. at Newcastle City Hall.
