Happy Wednesday, Newcastle. We're passing along this request for volunteers from our partners at Newcastle Trails. It's short notice, but they'd really appreciate your help!

Newcastle Trails needs volunteers for a work party this Saturday. We’ll be digging up blackberries from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. where the CrossTown Trail meets the Olympus Trail near the cemetery. We’ll need wheelbarrows to move the cut-up blackberry canes and corms down to 129th Avenue Southeast at the cemetery, where the City will provide a trailer. If you can make it with a wheelbarrow, call Peggy Price at (425) 829-2196, and let us know. (No RSVP is necessary—come on over if you find you have a little time.)

We’ll have a few tools, including loppers, but bring your own digging tools if you can – plus heavy gloves, sturdy shoes or boots, and possibly a cushion. You can park near the cemetery, or in Hazelwood Ridge in or near the cul-de-sac at the east end of SE 77th Court.

Directions:

From 129th Ave. SE: Take the CrossTown Trail immediately north of the cemetery, and follow it just past the cemetery’s northwest corner.

From Newcastle Way & 126th Ave. SE: Take 126th Ave SE south from Newcastle Way into Hazelwood Ridge and turn left onto SE 77th. From the end of the cul-de-sac, go right past the retention pond, and turn left on the CrossTown Trail for a few yards.

From Olympus (SE 80th Way & 128th Ln. SE): Walk north on the Olympus Trail to the work site.

From Olympus (SE 80th Way & 126th Ave. SE): Walk north down 126th Ave. SE into Hazelwood Ridge and turn right on SE 77th. From the end of the cul-de-sac, go right past the retention pond, and turn left on the CrossTown Trail for a few yards.

We’re looking forward to reopening this portion of trail after some large tree trunks fell across it, and it fell into disrepair. It’s already been partially cleared, but to prevent blackberries from taking over again, we need to remove the corms (thick, shallow roots).
