Newcastle Area Youth Artists Exhibition
March 2-27
UPDATE: The March 5 Artists Reception has been postponed. Newcastle Arts Council presents an art exhibition showcasing the creative talents of youth in our community.  Artists Reception Thursday, March 5, 7-8:30pm View the exhibition, meet the artists and enjoy light refreshments. Sponsored by Newcastle Arts Council and the Friends of the Newcastle Library.

 Celebrating Asian Arts Day

Saturday, March 7 

Origami Flowers
12:00-1:30 PM
All ages welcome but children may need some assistance. Celebrate Asian culture by making an elegant, yet easy origami flower or two to take home with you. All supplies provided.

Celebrating the Reopening of the Seattle Asian Art Museum
2:00 –3:00 PM
Presented by Tamara Moats, art historian. Learn about the spaces and exhibitions at the newly renovated Seattle Asian Art Museum in Volunteer Park. The collection breaks boundaries to offer a exploration of art from China, Japan, India and Southeast Asia.

Ikebana Demonstration
3:30 - 4:45pm
Join us for a demonstration of Ikebana, Japanese flower arranging. We are honored to host Shirley Hill as our guest Komon in demonstrating the expressions of balance, depth, line, color, form, movement and space in her arrangements.

Toddler Story Time
Monday, March 2, 9, 16, and 30, 10:00am
Ages 1 to 3, siblings are welcome to attend. Join us for songs, books and bubbles in this 30 minute program for toddlers! Up to 30 minutes of play time takes place right after Story Time. Story Time will start promptly at 10:05am. Space is very limited. First come, first served.

Play & Learn Chinese
Tuesday, March 3, 10, 17, 24 and 31, 10:30am
Newborn to age 5 with caregiver. Have fun singing songs, sharing books and stories, creating art and playing.This program is conducted primarily in Chinese but the facilitator is a bilingual English/Chinese speaker.

Infant Story Time
Wednesday, March 4, 11, 18 and 25, 10:00am
Newborn to 12 months with adult, siblings are welcome to attend. Join us for songs, books and bubbles in this 30 minute program for babies! Up to 30 minutes of play time takes place right after Story Time. Story Time will start promptly at 10:05am. Space is limited. First come, first served.

Preschool Story Time
Wednesday, March 4, 11, 18 and 25, 11:15am

Ages 3 to 5 with adult, siblings are welcome to attend. Join us for songs, books and bubbles, and work on kindergarten readiness skills in this 30 minute program for preschoolers! Up to 30 minutes of play time takes place right after Story Time. While siblings are welcome to attend, families with just toddlers are encouraged to attend one of Monday's Toddler Story Times. Space is limited, first come, first served.

Japanese Story Time
Thursday, March 5, 12, 19 and 26, 10:00am
Family program, all ages welcome. Come to the meeting room for stories and songs in Japanese! This program is for Japanese speaking children and families, and for children learning Japanese.

Toddler Story Time

Girls Who Code 
Monday, March 2, 9, 16 and 30, 6:00 PM
Girls Who Code is a national nonprofit organization aiming to inspire, educate, and equip girls with the computing skills they need in the 21st century. This free, after-school club is for girls (and students of all genders) in grades 6 to 12 looking to explore coding in a fun and friendly environment. Library laptops are limited. Students may bring their own laptop. Space is limited. In partnership with Girls Who Code and Seattle Tech Guru. Snacks provided by the Friends of the Newcastle Library.

Grades K-12. Drop in for free homework help from trained volunteer tutors.

Kerbal Space Program Club
Wednesday, March 4, 6:00 PM
Ages 10 to 17. Join fans of rockets, space travel and explosions in playing the award-winning computer game Kerbal Space Program! Use one of the library's laptops or bring your own if you already play. Space is limited.

Newcastle Youth Community Engagement (NYCE)
Wednesday, March 18, 6:30 PM
Attention middle and high school students! Volunteer and join NYCE to help the Newcastle Library and the City of Newcastle create the programs, services and events you want to see! Munch on snacks while you make a difference. Sponsored by the Friends of the Newcastle Library and the City of Newcastle.

Create and Build 3D Pens
Saturday, March 28, 2pm
Ages 9 to 17, ages 6 to 8 with adult. Presented by the Newport High STEM League. Come experiment with a 3D pen, then join in a friendly competition to build the tallest tower! The 3Doodler Start melts plastic that cools almost instantly into a solid, stable structure. Space is limited. First come, first served. Sponsored by the Friends of the Newcastle Library.

Hands-On Recycled Papermaking

All ages welcome. Presented by Artist Liz Gasper. Learn about the fascinating history of papermaking, then experience for yourself transforming old paper scraps and junk mail into new handmade paper with a few simple tools. You'll learn simple tips for papermaking you can do at home. No registration required. All supplies provided. Sponsored by the Friends of Newcastle Library. Wisdom Wednesdays: Greeting Life’s Challenges: What’s Stress Got to Do with It?
Wednesday, March 25, 1pm
Join us the last Wednesday of the month to listen, learn and share your ideas on meaningful topics. Get advice on issues and share your wisdom so we can learn from each other and grow. Guided by a facilitator from Northwest Center for Creative Aging. This month we’ll discuss how we deal with stress. How do stress and resilience relate to each other? We’ll share tips for managing stress and increasing resilience.

Discover what it was like to be alive during the time Jane Austen wrote her books. Tames appears in an authentic Regency dress that any of Jane Austen’s characters would have worn during the day and describes each piece of clothing as well as etiquette.
