Police Seeking Information About Suspected Arson
Posted on 10/21/2019

Today, Newcastle PD responded to the report of a vandalism on the Pipeline Trail behind the Historic Newcastle Cemetery. When officers arrived and spoke with the reporting party, they were shown an area approximately 3 square feet in size that had been burned from a fire in the last 2-3 days. In the burned area was a can of hairspray, newspapers and a lighter.

The reporting party told the Officer that this is the third such fire in the last three months along the trail in the same area. The others were in mid-September and early October, but neither was reported to NPD or Bellevue Fire. The reporting party said that there had been a similar can of hairspray at one of the previous fires as well, and that the others were also about 3 square feet in size.

NPD called the King County Sheriff's Office Fire Investigation Unit to come to the scene. Investigators with FIU examined today's scene and the other areas that had previously burned. Evidence was collected at each scene and signs were put up in the area that read ARSON and ask for the public's help.

At this point, FIU cannot confirm the others were started with hairspray or some other accelerant, but they do believe the fires are connected. All three fires appeared to have burned out on their own. None of the fires were set near or threatened any structures at any time.

KCSO FIU also wanted to reassure residents that these fires have NO connection to the initial house fire or the "rekindle" at the same residence in late September. The cause from those was determined to be accidental from a speaker the first time, and a "rekindle" caused by the wind later that night.

Anyone with information is asked to call 206-296-3311 or 1-800-552-7766 regarding King County Case #C19040325. All calls can remain anonymous and a reward is being offered for tips leaving to an arrest and conviction.
