National Night Out is Aug. 1

Newcastle will join cities across the country in celebrating National Night Out on Tuesday, Aug. 1. The annual community-building event aims to heighten crime prevention awareness, strengthen neighborhood spirit and police-community partnerships, and send a message to criminals about neighborhoods organized against criminal activity.

National Night Out is celebrated with neighborhood block parties, often visited by local law enforcement. It also provides a great opportunity to bring police and neighbors together under positive circumstances.

City officials and Newcastle police officers will stop by neighborhood events that are pre-registered with the city. Email Officer Devon Edwards at devon.edwards@kingcounty.gov to ensure officers know about your community gathering. In the email, provide the location of the gathering, the estimated number of attendees and an event time frame.

Organizers first launched National Night Out in 1984, when 2.5 million people participated in more than 400 communities and 20 states. Today, an estimated 38 million neighbors in 16,000 communities across the nation celebrate National Night Out.
