Historic Cemetery Photos on Display at City Hall

Visitors can get a closer look at the Newcastle Historic Coal Miner’s Cemetery without stepping foot in the forested hillside sanctuary.

Large photos of the cemetery are now on display at Newcastle City Hall. The photos, which include closeups of tombstones as well as a view of what the cemetery used to look like, are located in display cases in the lobby.

The Newcastle Historical Society rotates items in the cases periodically, giving residents a chance to learn about the history of the city. The cemetery photos were taken by Bob Cerelli.

See the cemetery in person this Memorial Day, when visitors are invited to explore it. The normally closed final resting place of Newcastle’s pioneers welcomes visitors to explore the city’s history at 2 p.m. May 29, when Vickie Baima Olson, a descendent of Italian immigrants who came to Newcastle in the late 1800s, will lead a tour of the cemetery.

The cemetery is at 7811 129th Ave. SE. Parking is available at Lake Boren Park. Follow the upper loop trail onto 129th Avenue Southeast and look for the open gate in the chain link fence. The Memorial Day tour is presented by the Newcastle Historical Society.
