May 15 is National Peace Officers Memorial Day, a date that pays special recognition to those law enforcement officers who have lost their lives in the line of duty for the safety and protection of others.

In Newcastle, it’s a time to remember KCSO Deputy Rich Herzog who 15-years ago this June, was killed in the line of duty along Coal Creek Parkway. A memorial to Deputy Herzog sits on Coal Creek Parkway near the Newcastle Fruit and Produce Stand. Photos were recently added along the fence behind the memorial marker to add emphasis to the location.

On Dec. 2, 2016, the King County Sheriff's Office unveiled a memorial honoring the 15 fallen King County deputies and 1 sheriff killed in the line of duty since the office was established in 1852. The monument is located in the King County Courthouse and Deputy Herzog's shield is mounted toward the center.

We will never forget Newcastle Deputy Rich Herzog's ultimate sacrifice. In 2016, 145 officers were killed in the line of duty nationwide. So far this year, 46 officers have been killed in the line of duty.
