City Council Vacancy - Applications Now Being Accepted

 APPOINTMENT


The City of Newcastle is seeking applications for appointment to the office of Newcastle City Councilmember, Position 4. The Council is the City’s legislative governing board of seven elected officials. Position 4 will become vacant on August 1 due to a resignation and will be filled pursuant to applicable state law by appointment of a qualified registered voter of the city who has resided within the Newcastle city limits for at least one year.
 
 

TERM OF SERVICE 

The appointment term is expected to begin sometime before October 29, 2021, and will last until certification of the general election in November 2023. The appointee selected will have the opportunity to run for election in November 2023, subject to the laws and regulations governing candidacy for local elective office in Washington.
 
 

DUTIES 

City Councilmembers form the city’s legislative body, which exercises the duties and powers of a city council for an Optional Municipal Code City under state law. Councilmembers attend regular evening meetings on the first and third Tuesday of the month, participate in council and regional committees as needed, and may attend additional, occasional day or evening meetings throughout the year.
 

Some of the Council’s powers include enactment of ordinances and resolutions, oversight of the City Manager, approval of the City budget, and approval of the work plans of the city’s advisory boards and commissions.
 

State law requires Councilmembers to file financial disclosure with the Washington Public Disclosure Commission including income, asset, and debt information that will be accessible to the public. Councilmembers are bound by state and local ethics and conflict-of-interest rules. They uphold state law regarding open government and public records and are called to treat public service as a public trust. 

Newcastle City Councilmembers serve at large, representing the entire Newcastle community.
 

COMPENSATION 

In consideration of the work they perform for the residents of the city, Councilmembers receive a modest salary of $500/month.
 
 

REQUIREMENTS 

Interested applicants must be registered to vote in Newcastle and have been residents of Newcastle for at least a year preceding appointment.

Applicants must apply by 5 p.m., August 20, 2021. The City Council intends to select an appointee to fill the vacancy before October 29, 2021.
