The Newcastle Planning Commission’s March 25 meeting will be held via video conference as we all work together to follow the guidance of public health officials and implement social distancing. During the meeting, Commissioners will consider the 2020 Comprehensive Plan amendment docket and continue discussing an ordinance addressing short-term rentals. View the full agenda packet here.

The Comprehensive Plan is a long-range plan that guides decision making to ensure steady progress toward achieving the City's desired future. The state's Growth Management Act limits review of proposed Comprehensive Plan amendments to no more than once a year. To ensure the public can view the proposals in a citywide context, the GMA directs cities to create a list (or docket) of Comprehensive Plan amendments that will be evaluated during the annual review process.

The short-term rental industry is growing rapidly via online platforms such as Airbnb and Vrbo, particularly around Seattle. As the number of properties for rent has increased, City staff have received a growing number of complaints from neighbors of short-term rentals. As a result, City staff and the Planning Commission are considering regulations intended to prevent public nuisances, protect the character of neighborhoods, enhance safety, protect Newcastle’s affordable housing stock and clarify zoning requirements for short-term rentals.

Members of the public will still have a chance to listen, watch and participate! You can make your voice heard and comment during either of the two public comment periods. The meeting begins at 6 p.m. on Wednesday, March 25.
