Waste Management Answers Questions About New Services

Waste Management has asked us to share these answers to FAQs they've received about the new bins and services. WHY ARE WE RECEIVING NEW CARTS?

New carts are being delivered as part of a new contract between the City of Newcastle and Waste Management. The yard waste and garbage carts are changing colors to align with many other cities across King County. WM is replacing any customer owned cans with WM provided carts to increase safety for both residents and drivers.

I CURRENTLY HAVE SERVICE WITH A PERSONAL CAN- HOW WILL THE CHANGES AFFECT ME?

Since WM is no longer offering personal can service, we will be delivering a new WM cart equal to your current personal can service. 

WHAT SHOULD I DO WITH MY OLD PERSONAL CAN?

Personal cans may now be utilized for storing extra recycling, garbage, or yard waste. Remember, when setting out extra material make sure the type of material is labeled (garbage, recycle or yard waste) and note that garbage and yard waste extras will be charged according to the rates on wmnorthwest.com.

If you would like WM to remove your personal can, please place it at the curb on your next service day with a sign that says “Remove.” Removing these containers will not constitute an extra charge. 

WHAT CARTS WILL BE DELIVERED AND REMOVED?

WM began the process of delivering and removing both yard waste and garbage cans. This is happening due to the cart color change. We will be replacing your garbage and yard waste carts with the same sizes you currently have.

All new garbage carts have been delivered and all old yard waste carts have been removed. Recycle (blue) carts are not changing and therefore will not be involved in the delivery or removal process.

WHEN WILL MY NEW YARD WASTE CART BE DELIVERED?

New yard waste carts are being delivered 2/20 thru 2/23. Please begin using your new cart when it arrives. If you currently subscribe to yard waste, WM will be delivering the same size cart. If you do not currently subscribe to yard waste, WM will be delivering a default size of 96-gallons.

WHEN WILL MY OLD GARBAGE CART BE REMOVED?

WM will be removing old garbage carts next week on your regular service day (Monday, 2/25 or Tuesday, 2/26) Please store your old cart until the removal date. On your next service date, please place the cart at the curb for removal. 

WHAT IF I DON’T RECEIVE A NEW CART OR MY OLD CART IS NOT REMOVED?

WHAT CART SIZES ARE AVAILABLE WITH THE NEW CONTRACT?

• Garbage carts- 20 gal., 35 gal., NEW! 45 gal., 64 gal., 96 gal.

• Yard Waste carts- 20 gal., 35 gal., 64 gal., 96 gal.

• Recycle carts- 35 gal., 64 gal., 96 gal.

WHAT SHOULD I DO IF I WANT TO CHANGE MY CART SIZE?

If you would like to adjust your service level for garbage, yard waste, or recycle please contact our call center after March 1, 2019 to avoid disruption during the delivery and removal period. They can be reached at 1-800-592-9995 or via wmnorthwest.com.

HOW MUCH YARD WASTE IS INCLUDED IN MY GARBAGE SERVICE?

Each resident receives 96-gallons of yard waste service included with their garbage service. This can be in the form of a 96-gallon cart, or a smaller cart size with extra material set out. Extra material can be placed in a personal can, paper yard bag, or bundled. 

WHY DID I RECEIVE A YARD WASTE CART - I DON’T PAY FOR YARD WASTE SERVICE?

In the new contract with WM, yard waste service is included in your garbage rate. WM will be delivering a 96-gallon cart to all residents who did not previously have yard waste service. If this is not a service you would like to keep, or you'd prefer a smaller cart, feel free to reach out to the call-center at 1-800-592-9995 or via wmnorthwest.com to schedule a cart removal. Opting in or out of yard waste service will not change the monthly rate since the cost is embedded in the garbage rate.

WHAT IF I DON’T WANT YARD WASTE SERVICE?

Please contact our call-center after March 1, 2019 and a representative will schedule the removal of the yard waste cart.

HOW DO I PICK UP MY FREE KITCHEN COMPOST CONTAINER?

Free kitchen compost containers will be available for residents to pick up beginning March 1, 2019. Residents can pick up one container and two free liners at Newcastle City Hall. Please visit wmnorthwest.com for tips on composting at home. Newcastle City Hall is open Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

HOW DO I CLEAN MY YARD WASTE CART?

As part of the new contract, residents may elect to have WM clean their yard waste cart for a fee. For more information, or to schedule this service, please contact our call center at 1-800-592-9995 or via wmnorthwest.com
