Public Memorial Scheduled for Newcastle Trails Icon Jim Price

The City of Newcastle is mourning the death of Community Activities Commissioner Jim Price, a tireless community volunteer who was instrumental in fostering the growth and maintenance of the city’s prized trail system.

“Jim Price was the true definition of community spirit,” said Newcastle City Manager Rob Wyman. “He cared deeply about the Newcastle community and never hesitated to get involved through his work with Newcastle Trails, the Newcastle Chamber of Commerce or the Newcastle Arts Council. Newcastle is the desirable, livable city it is today, thanks to his commitment to community service.”

Jim and his wife Peggy moved to Newcastle in 1986. The two quickly became instrumental community figures, known for volunteering their time and giving back. In 1994, Jim was among a group of dedicated citizens who successfully advocated for the city’s incorporation. He’d go on to serve as a founding member of the Newcastle Chamber of Commerce, Newcastle Trails and the Newcastle Arts Council. Jim had also served on the city’s all-volunteer Community Activities Commission since 2013.

In Newcastle, the Price name is synonymous with community service, and that’s doubly true when it comes to the trail system. Jim and Peggy, who met as University of Washington students when Peggy joined Jim’s hiking club, have spent countless hours building, maintaining and promoting the city’s vast network of trails. That work is inspired by the couple’s profound commitment to the environment and passion for the Newcastle community.

“Our thoughts are with Jim’s wife Peggy, their son Glenn and the entire Price family,” Wyman said. “Jim’s selfless and kind presence will be truly missed, but his memory lives on in the Newcastle institutions he helped create. The next time you find yourself on a Newcastle trail, take a moment to appreciate the surrounding beauty and thank Jim for all of his contributions.”

The community is invited to a public memorial service honoring Jim at Lake Boren Park on Sunday, Sept. 16, at 1:30 p.m. Learn more about the memorial here.
