Newcastle Gains Police Officer in 2018

The Newcastle Police Department will add an eighth patrol officer to help protect a community that will continue to thrive and grow in 2018. The Newcastle City Council made public safety a priority in the recently adopted 2018 budget, voting to allocate funds for an additional police officer next year.

“As the City of Newcastle continues to grow, it’s vital we have enough officers to protect our citizens. We often only have one officer on duty at a time, but this addition will ensure we have more officers on the street to respond when needed. It will also allow us to focus more time and energy on particular areas of citizen concern, including traffic issues such as speeding,” said Newcastle Police Chief Melinda Irvine.

The city contracts with the King County Sheriff’s Office (KCSO) for police services. The department requires paying salary for months in advance of an officer being available for duty, so the new addition likely won’t join the city until the second half of 2018. The advance payment covers the necessary training, including academy and field training, prior to bringing on a new officer.

The new officer will bring the Newcastle Police Department to 10 employees, including a detective and Chief Irvine. In 2014, the city added the full-time detective. In 2016, the department added another patrol officer to the force for the first time since 1999. The city’s population had grown by about 50 percent since that time, and with additional multifamily development expected next year, this trend is expected to continue.

"Our primary concern is the safety of Newcastle residents and visitors. We're excited to welcome a new officer who will continue to help us work with residents to keep this community safe and secure," Chief Irvine said.

An additional officer is one of other important decisions the Council made as part of the budgeting process this year. Look for more information in the coming weeks.
