Holiday Safety Tips
Posted on 11/21/2017

The Newcastle Police Department wants to ensure your holiday season is a safe and happy one. Remember, if you see something suspicious, do not hesitate to call the non-emergency police number 206-296-3311. It’s a good idea to program the number into your cell phone.

Follow these tips to protect yourself and your property.

Package Thefts

As more and more consumers do their shopping online, package thefts become an increasing problem during the holiday season. Take precautions ahead of time to make sure your present gets delivered to the intended recipient.

- Track your shipment online and ensure someone is home to receive it during the scheduled delivery.

- If someone can’t be home, arrange to have it delivered to a safe location such as your workplace or a trusted neighbor. Consider using a service such as an Amazon Locker, which allows users to pick up packages from the secure locker at a time that's convenient for you. There is an Amazon Locker located in the Newcastle Safeway.

- Choose a shipping option that requires a signature for delivery.

Car Prowls

When out shopping, don’t forget to close all car windows, lock your car and park in well-lit areas. Be aware of your surroundings. Don’t leave presents visible in the car, and don’t load your car with goods, then head back into the store for more shopping. It’s safest to remove all loose items from the vehicle, especially laptops, GPS units, purses and wallets.

“Even a bag of laundry filled with your visiting college student’s dirty clothes could be enticing to thieves. The bad guy doesn’t know it’s just a bag of laundry,” said Newcastle Police Chief Melinda Irvine.

Holiday Safety

If your family is heading out of town for the holidays, we encourage you to fill out a Vacation House Check form at www.newcastlewa.gov/housecheck. Submit your information and the Newcastle Police Department will periodically check your house and have your contact information in case of an emergency while you’re gone.

Since this is only one way to help with safety, make sure you take the necessary steps when planning to be away from your home. Stop the mail and paper, or have a neighbor pick them up each day. Also have a trusted neighbor keep an eye on your house and pick up any mail, packages or other items that may be left on your door.

Finally, celebrate responsibly this holiday season. Police agencies across the region, including Newcastle, will be doing extra DUI emphasis patrols through the month of December.
