Newcastle Receives Positive State Audit Report
Posted on 11/02/2017

An independent audit of the city’s 2016 finances and an accountability audit covering 2015 and 2016 identified no findings or concerns. Representatives of the Washington State Auditor’s Office shared the results of the audit with the City Council at an Oct. 27 exit conference.

The state auditor’s office performs financial statement audits to determine if the local governments' financial statements are accurate and complete. An accountability audit assesses how local governments manage, use and safeguard public resources. It evaluates whether there is reasonable assurance the local government adheres to applicable state laws, regulations and its own policies and procedures.

“The results of this independent audit stand as a testament to our staff’s dedication and a positive acknowledgement of our work to employ best practices in city operations. We are committed to transparency as we continue to operate a fiscally responsible government,” said Newcastle City Manager Rob Wyman.

Additionally, the auditor’s office examined specific concerns submitted by members of the public regarding compliance with budgeting requirements, the adoption process for the 2017 budget, and the use of funds and other concerns related to the Newcastle City Hall purchase. The office determined that the city complied with all statutory requirements. They did not find any areas of non-compliance, nor any immediate concern with the city’s financial condition or budget shortfalls.

Annual independent audits performed by the Washington State Auditor’s Office provide essential accountability and transparency for city operations. This information is valuable to management, the governing body and public stakeholders when assessing a government’s stewardship of public resources.
